Aquaponics and Self Watering Container Garden - Photo Album 9Dec2012
Strange \(?) Tilapia behavior and other updates on my Self Watering Container garden and Aquaponics in Jeddah
09 December 2011, Friday
My two adult tilapias in a drum, separated by having one of them in a floating strainer have just amazed me. The one in the floating strainer jumped twice to join the other one. A few months back when I bought them from Marhaba Supermarket, they were fighting violently causing many of them ending up in my fring pan. And, the sad part is that most of the dead were pregnant....aaaaaaaaaggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhh. Anyway, fast forward to just about a couple of days back, they became friends all of a sudden. Could it be that having the barrier somehow allowed them familiarity but in a safer environment?
So, they are there in the tank(drum), I removed the strainer and keeps on observing them every now and then. My most wild thought could be that they are a couple trying to mate, which would be one big blessing for my Aquaponics. It is very hard to find fingerlings here and as I mentioned earlier, what you would normally get are adult tilapias and to my untrained eyes, I really couldn't figure out one from the other because they have almost the same looks.
I am leaving them for now, I mean letting them do what they want, feeding them and saying hi. I took most of the nutrient riched water yesterday and replaced with some fresh water so I can use the former to water my plants in self watering containers.
And, speaking of my self watering container garden... i am a really happy farmer.. mashallah tabarakallah! Spinach, Swiss Chards, Peppers are doing great together with various ornamental plants. Got a bunch of Basil young plants that I need to replant today to give some to friends.
Aquaponics update: Cucumbers have some female flowers and plenty of male flowers....inshallah will have some real fruits in a few days time. Onions are doing so well, amazingly. A lot of other veggies doesn't appreciate being around a dominant Bitter Melon plant and refuses to grow fast. But, the bittermelon still is giving nice fruits.

Aquaponics in Science Exhibition at AlWurood International School, Jeddah

Above are some photos of Osama, Naseem and Omar during the Science Exhibition at the AlWurood International School, Jeddah.
Unfortunately, the pathetic principal and guests didn't even bother to visit the rooms where the lower classes are (grade V), the kids were very disappointed especially so that they have been working on this project for months.
I just encouraged them to take the learning and inshallah they will get another chance to show to the school their amazing project. Thanks to Baboo also, Osama's father and Omar's uncle, who happened to be my longest bestest friend here in Jeddah for supporting the kids and the project.

Aquaponics and Self Watering Container Garde in Jeddah update 08 Sept 2011
Here are some very fresh pictures of my indoor and outdoor Aquaponics plus my garden in Self Watering Container pots. For my Aquaponics, I am growing Ampalaya(Bittermelon), Basil, Bell Pepper, Swiss Chards, numerous flowering plants, Sweet Potatoe, Watermelon, Tomatoes, Celery, Brocolli, Cilantro, Pepper, Kangkong with Tilapia, Goldfish and Pangasius. I started my journey in late January 2011. I live in Saudi Arabia. As a supplement, I am using Fermented Plant/Fruit Juice and spraying my plants twice or three times a week. Fish does not mind.

(above) Flowering plants and tomatoe seedlings in my flood & drain Aquaponics system indoors powered by a single adult tilapia. for the the grow lights I am using blue and red tube lights and one fluorescent bulb, on in the day and off in the night, the water is also pumped only during the day and off in the night

(above) the biggest swiss chard i have grown so far in my indoor AP system
(above) a few month old flowering plants, growth is slow because of the lack of light, i can't take them outside because they will die from 40+ temperature so I rather have them indoors in my AP system
